Manzano Pepper Seeds

Seed/Plant info: Manzano peppers, also known as “apple peppers” (Manzana=apple in Spanish!) due to their round shape, are a unique type of chili pepper originating from Mexico and South America. Manzano peppers have a medium heat level, ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), making them about twice as hot as jalapeños. They have a distinctive fruity, sweet, tangy, and citrusy flavor. You'll definitely notice the sweetness associated with this pepper more than other hot peppers. You can really do just about anything with this variety– stuff ‘em, make a sauce or paste, create a delicious salsa or just snack on them raw! 

There are several fun facts about Manzano peppers that make them truly unique. The pods themselves have thick walls and contain black seeds, which is very unusual among chili peppers. The plant itself is also distinctive in that the leaves are hairy, they are resistant to low temperatures and grow well in 45-60 degrees (F) of heat. They also perform quite well in partial shade as opposed to other pepper plants thriving in full sun. If protected from frost, the Manzano pepper plant can grow up to ten feet high and produce for 15 years! Their vines can even be trellised like a grape. Fruits mature from green to vibrant yellowish-orange or red in about 100 days after sowing. A great addition to the Sweet Heat family of peppers! Capsicum Pubescens. Of note, Pubescens varieties are notoriously difficult to germinate!
